That closing action is the whole point. An open vent on an outside wall is an invitation — wind, rain, insects, mice, and cold air straight back down the duct. A shutter closes the opening every time the fan cycles off, with no power and nothing to maintain.

FAQ
Does it keep vermin out?
The closed blades stop birds, rodents and larger insects using the duct as a doorway, which an open vent does not. For fine insect exclusion add mesh behind the grille — mesh in front of the blades clogs and stops them closing.
Can I fit it on a ceiling or facing down?
No. The blades need to hang vertically to close under gravity.
Do I still need a backdraft damper as well?
Usually one or the other. The shutter closes the outside opening; a damper closes the duct itself. On an exposed, windy elevation, or a sealed grow room where backflow really matters, fitting both means wind that gets past the blades still cannot travel down the run.
Will it restrict airflow?
A little — the blades sit in the airstream when open. It is a fair trade for closing the opening the other twenty hours of the day. Do not reduce the duct at the grille to compensate; match the opening to the duct.
What sizes do you stock?
100 mm and 150 mm. This is the 100 mm; the other is 150 mm. For 200 mm, pair a 200 mm grille vent with a 200 mm backdraft damper inside the duct.
