The Lykyn Smart Mushroom Grow Box does that part for you. Load a ready-to-fruit block, pick the species in the app, and it runs humidity, airflow and light on its own from 28 built-in species profiles. It's a reusable automated mushroom grow kit for growing oyster, lion's mane, shiitake and other gourmet mushrooms at home, one block after another.

Mushroom grow kit or automated grow box?

A standard mushroom grow kit is a single colonised block in a box. It fruits once or twice, and you do the misting and fanning. The Lykyn is the part that stays: a reusable fruiting chamber that takes a fresh block each cycle and controls the conditions for you. You still need a block each time. It doesn't come with one.

What you can grow

The 28 profiles cover the gourmet edible species home growers can buy as blocks in Australia: oyster (pearl, blue, golden, pink, phoenix, black pearl), king oyster, lion's mane, bear's head, shiitake, beech / shimeji, pioppino, chestnut, enoki, wood ear and maitake, plus more. A manual mode lets you set your own values for anything outside the list. Blocks vary between growers, so follow the instructions that come with yours.

How to grow mushrooms at home with the Lykyn

1. Add water to the reservoir (distilled or RO). 2. Place a ready-to-fruit block on the tray. 3. Open the block as its grower instructs, usually a large X cut with a clean blade. 4. Pick the species in the app. The box runs from there and tells you when to top up the water.

We tested two grows ourselves before writing this page: a lion's mane block and a Pearl Oyster block in 6 days, with photos day by day.

A straight answer on what it can and cannot do. The Lykyn controls humidity, airflow and light. It doesn't heat or refrigerate. The chamber follows your room temperature, so keep it indoors, out of direct sun, away from hot garages and cold sheds. It needs the app and a 2.4 GHz WiFi connection to set up and start a grow, though a running grow carries on if the WiFi drops. The panels are acrylic on a plastic frame, not glass and metal.

Is this a mushroom grow kit?

It's the reusable part of one. Most kits are a single block you throw out after a flush or two. The Lykyn is the chamber you keep and load with a new block each time. Blocks are sold separately by Australian growers.

Where do I get fruiting blocks?

From Australian mushroom growers, from around $24 a block, shipped nationally. We've been using Kai Kai Farm in Queensland for lion's mane and oyster blocks. We have no arrangement with them. Any standard ready-to-fruit block up to 2.7 kg works. Follow the grower's instructions for that block.

Which mushrooms are easiest for beginners?

Oysters. They're fast, forgiving and fruit in normal room temperatures. Lion's mane is a good second grow but takes three to four weeks, with nothing visible for the first week or so.
