Grow restaurant-quality gourmet mushrooms at home — no growing experience required. Traditional mushroom kits ask you to mix substrate, sterilise equipment, and manually spray and fan the block several times a day, and getting the humidity wrong is the most common reason a first attempt fails. The Lykyn Smart Mushroom Grow Box removes all of that: there's no substrate mixing, no sterilising, and no manual spray-and-fan routine opening the block up to contamination every time you handle it. Add water, add your block, choose the species in the app, and the box manages humidity, airflow and light on its own — it even prompts you in the app when it's time to top up the water.
Full Automation, Not Just a Box
Most grow tents and grow boxes are just an enclosure with a basic manual mister you babysit and adjust by feel.
The Lykyn app is what sets this one apart. Select your species and the app takes over completely — humidity, airflow and light are all set and driven automatically from one of 28 built-in profiles, each pre-tuned for exactly what that species needs. It runs continuously without you touching a dial. Want to fine-tune something yourself? You can switch just the fans to Custom and set your own airflow while humidity and light stay on the species recipe, and a full manual mode lets you set your own values for any species outside the built-in list — so you're never locked out of control, you just do it through the app rather than physical buttons on the unit.
Important: there is no physical control panel or buttons on the unit itself. The Grow Box is controlled entirely through the Lykyn app — you'll need a compatible smartphone and a 2.4GHz WiFi connection to set it up and to start each grow. Once a grow is running it doesn't depend on WiFi: if your connection drops, the box keeps reading its sensors and running the species recipe on its own, then syncs the full log back to the app when the connection returns.

Single Layer — Built for Standard and Larger Fruiting Blocks
The Grow Box takes fruiting blocks up to 2.7kg (6lb) — noticeably more headroom than the 2.2kg blocks most commercial mushroom-block suppliers sell. That extra capacity means less trimming or splitting a block to make it fit, and room for a bigger block per cycle.

No experience needed. There's no substrate mixing or sterilising to learn, and no manual spraying and fanning routine to get right — select the species in the app and it handles humidity, airflow and light automatically, prompting you when it's time to add more water.
A fruiting block is a bag of substrate that's already been fully colonised by mushroom mycelium — it's ready to fruit as soon as it's cut open and given the right humidity and airflow, which is exactly what the Grow Box automates. A block isn't included with the Grow Box, and it won't grow anything without one.
Blocks are sold by growers around Australia from around $24 each and ship nationally — we've been using Kai Kai Farm in Queensland, who grow their own fully colonised lion's mane and oyster blocks. We have no arrangement with them and make nothing on it. Quick Bloom Lights doesn't currently stock blocks ourselves, though we plan to in future — in the meantime any standard commercial fruiting block up to 2.7kg (6lb) will work.
It depends a lot on the species. On our own lion's mane run nothing visible happened for the first ten days or so, then the first pins appeared at the cut, and the full cluster came in by day 22 — with almost all of the growth in the final week. Oysters are much faster: our Pearl Oyster block showed first growth on day 4 and was harvested on day 6. Timing also varies with room conditions, but a quiet first stretch is the process working, not a fault.

No sterilising — that's exactly the part this is built to skip. Lykyn's guidance is to wipe the interior surfaces with 70% isopropyl alcohol between cycles, and rinse the exhaust spore filter if it's visibly laden. Every few cycles, empty and clean the reservoir and do a deeper wipe-down. The HEPA intake filter gets replaced periodically.
A few things to avoid: don't spray or pour liquid inside the chamber, keep water away from the sealed sensor area and the vents, and make sure any filter is completely dry before it goes back in. The panels are acrylic, so no abrasives on them either. In practice it's a few minutes between blocks, not a lab procedure.
It works best in normal indoor room conditions. The fans circulate and can keep the chamber a little cooler than a very warm room, but they don't actively heat or cool — avoid direct sun, hot garages, or unheated cold spaces for best results.
Up to 3–4 weeks per fill, depending on the species profile and room conditions — thirstier species like oysters, which need near-saturation humidity, will need refilling sooner than drier-tolerant species. The app lets you know when it's time to top up.
The app is required — there's no physical control panel or standalone mode. You'll need a compatible smartphone (iOS 12+ or Android 8+) and a 2.4GHz WiFi connection to set up the unit and to start each grow, as the box downloads the species recipe when a grow begins. Note it needs 2.4GHz specifically, not 5GHz, so if your home network is dual-band, connect it to the 2.4GHz network.
Once a grow is running, patchy WiFi isn't a problem. If the connection drops, the box keeps reading its sensors and running the recipe on its own — nothing pauses. When the WiFi comes back, it uploads the logged data so the app shows the full timeline. Live viewing in the app and starting a new grow are the only things that need a connection at the time.
