The Hy-Gen Complete pH Kit is a test-and-adjust kit for nutrient solutions: a drop-test pH indicator with test tube and colour chart, plus 150 mL of pH Up and 150 mL of pH Down to correct what it finds. No batteries, no calibration and no probe to look after. Hy-Gen is an Australian nutrient brand. Stocked in Sydney and shipped domestically.
Test in seconds
Fill the test tube with a sample of your solution, add one drop of the concentrated indicator, and compare the colour against the chart. Hy-Gen rate the result as accurate to within 0.5 pH units. That is enough to tell whether a solution is in range or has drifted out of it, and because there is nothing electronic, it cannot go out of calibration or die in a drawer.
Adjust with pH Up and pH Down
Hy-Gen's guidance is to check pH daily and after adding water or additives, and to adjust when it falls below 5.8 or rises above 6.5. Pre-dilute the pH Up or pH Down in water before adding it to the tank, start with half the amount you think you need, mix well, then allow 60 minutes before re-testing. Small steps stop you overshooting and chasing the number back and forth.
Drop test or meter?
The kit is a simple start for new growers and a reliable backup for anyone with a meter: if a pen reading ever looks wrong, a drop test tells you whether it is the water or the meter. For finer readings and EC, see the water test meters, such as the AC Infinity pH Meter Kit (±0.1) or the AC Infinity Hydroponic Meter PRO Kit for pH and EC together.

FAQ
Is a drop test accurate enough?
For keeping a solution between 5.8 and 6.5, yes. It reads to within half a pH unit, so it shows whether you are in range. If you want decimals, use a meter.
Can I use the pH Up and Down with other nutrient brands?
Yes. They adjust the pH of the water, whatever nutrient is in it. They work in soil and coco feed water as well as hydroponic tanks.
Why wait 60 minutes before re-testing?
pH takes time to settle after an adjustment. Testing straight away usually shows a false reading and leads to adding too much.
Does it test EC or nutrient strength?
No, pH only. For nutrient strength you need an EC meter such as the AZ 8362 EC & TDS Pen.
