What size opening do I cut?
Cut to the nominal size — 4 × 12 inch — and the face plate at 349 × 146 mm overlaps the cut edge for a tidy finish. Offer the plate up before you cut, not after.
Can I use it in a floor people walk on?
It is steel and fixed through the face, but these are ventilation registers rather than rated floor gratings. In a trafficked floor, site it where feet do not land or use a purpose-made grate rated for foot traffic.
Will it rust in a damp subfloor or a humid grow room?
The rustproof matte powder coat is why it handles damp better than a bare steel register. Anything steel in a permanently wet environment will suffer eventually — but a permanently wet subfloor is a drainage problem to fix first, and a permanently soaking grow room is a ventilation problem.
